Frequently asked questions

Does ShhhPlay keep a playback history?

Not unless you ask it to. Recording is off by default: no playback history, no resume positions, no recent-files list, no thumbnail cache. Turn it on in Settings → General, or with ⇧⌘P. The Local Data window shows what is stored and erases it.

How do I turn playback history back on?

Open Settings → General → Playback History and untick “Don’t record playback history”, or press ⇧⌘P. History, resume positions and the recent-files list then work normally.

Which video and audio formats are supported?

ShhhPlay plays what AVFoundation supports on your device, which covers MP4, M4V, MOV, most MP3/AAC/ALAC audio and HLS streams. Formats Apple does not decode — MKV with certain codecs, FLV, some FLAC variants — will not play, which is the trade-off for shipping no third-party playback engine.

How do I update ShhhPlay?

ShhhPlay is distributed through the Mac App Store, so updates are delivered automatically by macOS like any other App Store app. You can also check manually in the App Store's Updates tab.

How much does ShhhPlay cost?

ShhhPlay is free on the Mac App Store. There are no in-app purchases, subscriptions, or ads.

Does ShhhPlay collect any of my data?

No. ShhhPlay has no accounts, no analytics, and no telemetry. Your files never leave your Mac. See the Privacy Policy for full details on what is and isn't stored locally.
